When it comes to life altering, Earth shattering, eye-opening experiences of the beauty variety, I can probably count the number of times I have experienced these on both hands. As time inevitably rolls on, and new experiences lead to new discoveries, I find that it becomes harder and harder to inspire me. My creativity threshold is admittedly high, I just can’t help it.
Let’s just cut to the chase, shall we? Just last week, I was in the presence of greatness, and I feel the need to share. I had the incredible honor of not only meeting Alex Box, the exquisite makeup artist behind British beauty brand Illamasqua, but also of seeing her work in action. I attended a master class with a veritable goddess of the makeup artistry world, and I am forever inspired and changed.

In the world of beauty, fresh faced, barely there, and neutral have been used ad nauseum. Going beyond the flashy splashy world of high fashion and advertising, true artistic expression is oftentimes stifled, hindered, or even lost in translation. Alex Box has set out to change that. A true artist in every sense of the word, Alex Box has brought to life countless stunning images with makeup as art and the human body as a canvas. With her brilliant knack for artistry, and her keen sense of aesthetics, Alex, (along with Julian Kynaston and Joe Corre) has propelled a brand created for the sake of self-expression and alter egos. After a brief fan-girl moment, I settled in and began to watch her genius at work. The goal was to create a day to night look inspired by the newest colors in the collection, from Art of Darkness, to snippets of the spring color collections.
Rather than tell you what Alex did, allow me to show you:
The Products: A hodgepodge of permanent products, with the new Valentine’s Day lip items and Spring Sephora collection in there.

When contouring, it is imperative that the contour shade be flat matte. The goal is to create shadows, and you can’t do that with products that reflect light.
Static pure pigment is absolutely addictive, and can be applied anywhere for a pure, opalescent glow
There is no such thing as functional fixedness in the world of beauty. Eye shadow isn’t just for the eyes, but can be used on lips and cheeks. If you wish it, make it so.
There are no rules in the world of beauty. If you love the way you look, that is all that matters.
Alex’s must have product is Box lipstick, naturally. A true, matte red, the shade is as much a part of Alex’s persona as the signature platinum stripe on her raven mane.
I left that event with the need to create, and with good reason. You just may see yours truly rocking a blue brow in the near future.
